Many projects call themselves omnichannel once online and in-store channels share the same member account. Friction appears as soon as the customer continues: an online coupon cannot be used in store, stock shown online is unavailable for pickup, store teams cannot see online orders, or a cross-store return requires the customer to explain everything again.
Unified Identity Is Only the Start
The member centre should unify identity, tiers, points, stored value, coupons, benefits and service records. It must also define which benefits work everywhere and which apply only to a specific brand, store or campaign, then communicate those rules before checkout.
Products and Prices Need One Definition
Online and store channels may merchandise differently, but their product master, variants and base-price relationships cannot contradict one another. Channel differences should come from explicit rules rather than accidental drift between systems.
Inventory Determines Delivery Promises
Before displaying “available in store,” the system must know whether stock is sellable, protected, supported by an open store, eligible for pickup and ready within the promised time. After checkout it must handle reservation, shortage reassignment, cancellation release and after-sales replenishment.
Orders Need Cross-Touchpoint Service
A customer may order online, collect in store, exchange elsewhere or begin after-sales through customer service. Order, payment, fulfilment and after-sales data must work around one order context instead of forcing repeated explanations.
Attribution Shapes Team Support
Technical integration does not guarantee organisational cooperation. Associate outreach, store fulfilment, online conversion and cross-store after-sales all affect performance, so attribution and allocation rules must be defined during project planning.
Start With One Representative Journey
Choose a frequent scenario such as “browse online → select store → collect in store → receive store service.” Map membership, product, price, inventory, order, verification, attribution and finance states before expanding to local delivery and cross-store service.
